The brown marmorated stink bug is able to survive the harsh elements of winter by finding its way into various houses and structures. Adult stink bugs can actually live for several years when protected from the elements.
The stink bug is a persistent creature and will work its way through cracks in siding, soffits, roof shingles, and around doors and windows. Once it has found its way inside a house, it will enter a state of suspended animation and wait for winter to pass. During this period, the heat inside the structure will almost always awaken the stink bug and encourage activity and infestation.
The brown marmorated stink bug will leaves chemical pheromones on everything it touches and especially when it releases its odorous excretion. This odor is the main reason a house can become further infested, as it acts as a stink bug beacon and attracts more to the structure.
