How to Eradicate Stink Bugs
by William Campbell,
Stink Bug Expert
A person does not have to be an expert in entomology to know that the brown marmorated stink bug has the potential to turn into a huge problem. The bug was first introduced to Allentown, Pennsylvania during the mid-nineties. The living conditions proved to be ideal and now the insect can be found in all of Pennsylvania, as well as the surrounding states.
The question being posed to entomologists all over the country is how to eradicate stink bugs?
The question does not have an easy answer. The biggest problem is that the pesticides that kill the stink bug will also kill off other species of insects, many of which farmers need in order to keep their crops healthy. This has many entomologists turning to natural predators.
Natural predators are something that feeds on another life form. The use of natural predators has become a very important part in the organic farming craze that is currently so popular in the United States. The problem is that when it comes to the eradication of stink bugs, the insect has very few natural predators.
Some entomologists are working in a partnership with farmers and students to figure out how to eradicate stink bugs. One of the things they are looking at is if there is a way to produce crops that would actually repel the insect. Alternately, would there be a way to introduce more natural predators?
Work on this process is going slowly. One of the things that could speed up the process would be farmers and scientists having better lines of communication. When a farmer notices the stink bugs are starting to show up on their crops, they need to notify the science department that is working on the stink bug eradication project. On the other hand, the scientists need to discuss their theories and realize that some methods simply aren’t practical for the farming community in general.
